What is electron nanoscopy

The rapid developments in the fields of nanoelectronics, photonics, modern energy materials, smart and functional materials, and biotechnology, provide new challenges to observe, investigate, and characterize nanomaterials and nano-systems down to the atomic scale.
Electron nanoscopy provides complete characterization of condensed matter (structural, chemical, electronic, mechanical, etc.) with unprecedented resolution even reaching the level of individual atoms.
This requires advanced electron microscopes that are large infrastructures of high specifications and operating requirements.
The interdisciplinary applications of electron Nanoscopy have guided scientific discoveries in new materials, nanotechnology and biotechnology.

AIMS OF NANOSCOPY-GR

Both ElMicLab and EMNL operate modern workhorse electron microscopes. These include high resolution scanning-transmission and transmission electron microscopes (HRSTEM and HRTEM). Both labs are interconnected through the national infrastructure platform Innovation-EL for the effective utilization of these large instruments in order to the benefit the academic community and the national industry.

Nanoscopy-GR aims to coordinate research efforts in order to provide state-of-the-art services to both Greek and international researchers, increase the efficiency of infrastructure utilization, and upgrade the capabilities of the employed methodologies. Advanced nanoscopy services contribute significantly to the design and synthesis of devices, materials and systems of high added value.

Nanoscopy-GR facilitates scientific excellence by keeping pace with the rapid developments leading to the emergence of new methodologies (e.g. in situ / in operando techniques, advanced spectroscopies, 4D-STEM etc.). The network also aims to disseminate to the research and productive sectors the capacities offered by nanoscopy in a wide range of disciplines and to attract young scientists in the field.

The participating labs have a technical collaboration and exchange of knowledge with SMN/UiO on offering modern nanoscopy services. They also co-organize seminars, lectures, and practical training on emerging developments in electron Nanoscopy and on the interdisciplinary capacities of the network.
