The Greek node for

ELECTRON NANOSCOPY

“If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants.”

– Isaac Newton

Nanoscopy-GR is the Greek node for electron nanoscopy comprising the two most important Greek laboratories in the field, i.e. the Laboratory for Electron Microscopy and Structural Characterization of Materials (ElMicLab) of the Physics Department AUTh, and the Electron Microscopy and Nanomaterials Laboratory (EMNL) of the Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, NCSR Demokritos.

The node operates within the Innovation-EL Greek Infrastructure Network for Nanotechnology, Advanced Materials and Micro/Nanoelectronics, which offers services in materials growth, characterization and modelling.

Through the Bilateral Relations Fund of the European Economic Area Financial Mechanism 2014-2021, Nanoscopy-GR is associated with the Norwegian Centre for Transmission Electron Microscopy (NORTEM) hosted by the Department of Physics/Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology (SMN) of the University of Oslo.

The Nanoscopy-GR labs offer access to state of the art electron microscopes capable of structural and chemical analysis in the micro, nano and atomic scales. Its researchers provide the materials community with in-depth analyses by employing an integrated methodology that combines experimental observations with quantitative studies using image analysis and simulations, metrology, and theoretical tools such as atomistic and elasticity calculations, and topological theory.

In addition to providing innovative research services, Nanoscopy-GR also organizes seminars, webinars, workshops, public lectures, and practical training on the capacities offered by the network and on the emerging developments in Electron Nanoscopy.

Nanoscopy-GR addresses the materials research community both in the academic and the industrial/productive sectors, whether in Greece or abroad.

ElMIC LAB
Aristotle University
of Thessaloniki

The Laboratory for Electron Microscopy and Structural Characterization of Materials (ElMicLab) is housed in the Physics Department AUTh. It is the largest and oldest lab of its kind in Greece (established in 1963) and is licensed for provision of research services to both the industry and academia. Such services include materials characterization as well as training and consultation, using advanced electron microscopy techniques. The Lab is used by academic staff, postdoctoral fellows, and postgraduate students who participate in competitive European and national applied research projects on innovative materials. The ElMicLab researchers have extensive experience and expertise on materials systems such as semiconductors, metals and metallic glasses, ceramics and glass ceramics, composites, magnetic materials, thin films, superlattice structures. Emphasis is placed on functional materials, nanomaterials, nanostructures and low dimensional materials, including quantum wells, quantum dots, nanowires, nanoparticles, and 2D materials.

National Centre for Scientific Research Demokritos

The Electron Microscopy and Nanomaterials Laboratory (EMNL) is housed in the Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology of NCSR Demokritos. The Electron Microscopy Laboratory was established in 1987 with the acquisition of the first scanning electron microscope and under its current name Electron Microscopy and Nanomaterials Lab (EMNL) has been operating since 2014. The EMNL group focuses on the use of electron microscopy techniques in nanotechnology and materials science. In particular our research concerns the study of materials/nanostructures from the μm- down to the atom- scale, utilizing scanning and transmission electron microscopy, in order to investigate their key-nanoscale features and understand the correlation of these features to their macroscopic properties. This knowledge enables the optimization of growth/synthesis conditions as well as the design of new materials/nanostructures with improved and/or tailor-made properties.

nORWEGIAN CENTER FOR TRANSMISSION
ELECTRON MICROSCOPY

The Oslo node of NORTEM is hosted by the Department of Physics/Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology (SMN). The lab is located in Oslo Science Park, and comprises researchers, students, and technical staff from the Department of Physics, Department of Chemistry, and SINTEF Materials Physics. It operates a highly advanced aberration-corrected and monochromated FEI Titan G2 60-300, optimized for sub-Angstrom spatial resolution STEM imaging and chemical analysis (EDX) and high energy resolution for EELS spectroscopy. It is also equipped with sample holders suitable for a variety of in situ / in operando atomically-resolved studies of materials exposed to heat, electrical biasing, and gas environments. The Structure Physics section is in charge of running the lab, focusing on energy materials for sustainable development applications and renewable energy sources using advanced transmission electron microscopy and modelling. The infrastructure serves a broad range of activities in semiconductor physics, inorganic materials chemistry, electrochemistry, catalysis, and geology.

ElMicLab

The Laboratory for Electron Microscopy and Structural Characterization was established in 1963 and it is the largest lab of its kind in Greece.

EMNL

The Electron Microscopy and Nanomaterials Laboratory of NCSR Democritos was established in 1987.

Nanoscopy-GR

aims to coordinate research efforts in order to provide state-of-the-art services to both Greek and international researchers and facilitates scientific excellence by keeping pace with the rapid developments leading to the emergence of new methodologies.

scientific KNOWLEDGE AND INSTRUMENTS

Both ElMicLab and EMNL operate modern workhorse electron microscopes. These include high resolution scanning-transmission and transmission electron microscopes (HRSTEM and HRTEM).
